Two new national champions have been crowned at PLTC in the last couple of weeks.
First, our current Men's singles champion Diego Quispe-Kim won the national 18U title held in Auckland. Diego was the top seed in the tournament, and won through 5 rounds without dropping a set. That now completes the full set of titles for Diego, having also won the 12U, 14U and 16U titles in previous years. Diego paid thanks to his father, saying "Thank you to my Dad/Coach (Juan) for spending thousands of quality hours of coaching over the last 13 years to learn how to play tennis. My first tennis dream is now a reality for me!!" Diego is now has a Junior World ranking of 70, and is aiming to make it in to the top ten. All the best Diego!
Then, just two days ago, PLTC born-and-bred Una Misic won the national 12U title. For those of you who may not know, Una is the granddaughter of Goran, our current Juniors coach, and daughter of Gorana, who also coaches at the club. When asked for a comment, Una said "Winning a national title is a wonderful achievement and the result of many years hard work and dedicated effort. Hopefully this a stepping stone for the future." In an interesting piece of trivia, Una's mum Gorana won the very same 12U national title 28 years ago in 1994!
